Fullmetal Alchemist OVA - The Blind Alchemist

A 16 minute OVA based on a gaiden chapter from the FMA manga.

It's going to take quite a bit of exercise to burn off all this ice cream.

The ribbon is one of Al's weak spots.

Summary:
Ed and Al hear of a rumor of an alchemist successfully performing a human transmission. Following the lead, the brothers arrive at the estate of the Hamburgang family to look for the family's alchemist Judau. While Al is dragged away for play by the family's young daughter Rosalie, Ed talks with Mrs. Hamburgang and Judau. After Ed reveals his own experience with human transmutation, Judau explains that he had revived Rosalie and paid the price with his eyes. Thinking that he has found a genuine lead, Ed asks that Judau teach him the technique, but Mrs. Hamburgang denies the request, citing her late husband did not want Judau's alchemy to be passed to outsiders. Ed tries to push but decides to give it a rest after seeing the sad look in Mrs. Hamburgang's eyes.

Al is the ultimate toy for curious little kids.

Little Red Riding Hood is planning to rob the place?

After the meeting with Judau, Ed goes to look for Al inside the Hamburgang mansion. Mrs. Hamburgang requests that Ed do not enter the rooms in the second floor, but Ed decides to check out those rooms. On the second floor Ed spots Al being dragged into a room by Rosalie. Inside the room, Rosalie shows Al her secret: a motion-less, corpse-like girl sitting in a chair surrounded by flowers and stuffed toys. Rosalie explains that she is actually an orphan named Amy adopted by the family and the girl in the chair is the Rosalie who returned from Judau's transmutation. Amy explains she was adopted because she looked like Rosalie. Amy states that she'll never be the real Rosalie or truly part of the Hamburgang family, but at least it's better than staying at the orphanage. Outside the room, Ed, who has seen and heard everything, is surprised by Mrs. Hamburgang. Knowing that Ed would come to the room, Mrs. Hamburgang explains that her late husband had purposely deceived Judau because he wouldn't bear telling Judau about the failed transmutation. Now everyone else in the estate pretends that Amy is the real Rosalie so that Judau will not learn the truth.

Some secrets were meant to be kept that way.

The scene of a tragedy.

After leaving the Hamburgang estate, Al comments that the residents of the estate are nice people. Ed agrees, but he is also disappointed and saddened by the visit.

As stated in the preview text, this OVA is based on one of the gaiden chapters of the manga. This OVA was a short look at one of the more serious and depressing sides of the FMA universe, and as far as I can tell Bones has made a faithful adaptation of the manga. The point of this story is probably to drive home that human transmutation is something that makes a tragedy even worse. In the Elrics' case, they lost Al's body and Ed's two limbs; in the Hamburgang's case, Judau lost his eyes and everyone else in the estate had to resort to deceiving him for the rest of his life. In other words, human transmutation is not worth the trouble especially if the goal is to revive a dead loved one. I suppose in a way Judau was a little more successful than the Elrics as the Rosalie he produced stayed alive, but of course this is still a far cry from success and as Amy had noted nobody knows whose soul is actually living inside this body.

Speaking of FMA gaidens, I wonder if Bones will animate more of the gaiden chapters. The episode from the old anime with Havoc trying to date Alex Armstrong's little sister was a gaiden, and so was that episode where Ed fought Mustang in front of a crowd of soldiers. Oh, and how Riza got Black Hayate was based on a gaiden as well. There are also several other ones as well, some of which I haven't read so maybe it's time I go look for these chapters.
