To Love-Ru Darkness 01

I didn't know about this until a day ago, but To Love-Ru is back in manga form. Darkness is a sequel/spin-off of the original To-Love-Ru and it's serialized monthly in Jump Square. I'm sure nobody was satisfied with how the original manga ended (I sure wasn't), so it's good to see the To-Love crew are back at it again. Given the title, it sounds like Yami will be the female lead, which is not a big surprise considering she is one of the more popular characters from the series. Possibly due to the move to Jump Square, the series also received some "upgrades". You'll see what I mean by that later in the post.

It's Yami's show now.

Summary:
Rito still leads a complicated life after the three Devilukean princesses moved into his home. In particular, Momo has been giving him a lot of trouble lately, including an episode where she unexpectedly joined Rito during a bath and declared that she'll help Rito build a harem. The trouble continues the next day at school where Rito learns that both Momo and Nana have transferred into the school as students in a lower grade. The two sisters (Momo in particular) prove to be quite popular in their class due to their looks. While Momo is basking in attention, Nana notices a girl looking out the window. Nana and the girl begin a conversation and Nana learns that the girl is named Mea.

Later in the day, Momo inspects the school for all the girls who are openly or secretly attracted to Rito in order to go ahead with her harem building plan. Momo notices Yami sitting outside and tries to convince Yami to become a student at the school (in order to further her plans to build a harem for Rito), but Yami proves to be hard to move as her feelings for Rito are mixed. Suddenly, Rito runs onto the scene being chased by a group of student who appear to be under someone else's control. Momo and Yami beat down the students, but the person behind the attack starts speaking through one of the students. The perpetrator reveals that he/she was looking for Yami and is disappointed to see that Yami has grown soft after staying on Earth. The voice tells Yami that Earth is not the place for her and bids Yami to finish her assignment which is to kill Rito. Unbeknownst to Yami, Momo and Rito, Mea is watching them from inside the school.

It's a decent enough start to the series. This chapter establishes the beginning of the first storyline while providing plenty of the fan service. The fan service is typical of the To Love series… but now a bit more explicit and with nipples. That's right, instead of cleverly blocking out the spots like before, Darkness is showing nipples in full view. It's probably one of the "upgrades" that comes with moving to Jump Square which feature series that are slightly more mature than those in Weekly Shounen Jump. Claymore is in Jump Square and I definitely remember uncensored chests in that (plus fairly graphic violence), so I'm not surprised that To Love has uncensored chests as well. Personally, I don't care that much about the nipples, but it seems to have caused a stir in some online gathering places. The other aspects of the ecchi appear to have leveled up as well. For example, we have one scene in the bathtub where Momo was staring at Rito's crotch and made an expression (both of them were naked). There were plenty of naked situations in the original series, but the sexual undertones weren't quite as strong. The ecchi is a core part of the series, but let's hope Darkness has something more than just more explicit fan service.

With Yami as the central character, Darkness might actually stick with a central plot instead of being mostly standalone chapters and story-arcs sprinkled with some plot development in between like the original series. Yami's background as a feared intergalactic assassin might makes the story more interesting than the original series, and it may also mean we'll see more action as Yami's past starts catching up to her. Hopefully they'll be a good share of comedy as well. We'll have to see if that happens though. I'm also interested in seeing what kind of role Rito, Lala, and other characters will play now that Yami (presumably) has taken the lead. Let's hope Darkness will improve upon the original.
