Female characters in order of significance? Lala really got pushed to the background this time.
Summary:
Somewhere on the school roof, Mea reports her superior that she has made a friend and also made contact with Yami (by sending in brainwashed people to attack Rito), and their goal is to turn Yami back into a cold-blooded assassin by eliminating Rito. Back at Rito's house, Momo tells the same thing to Rito. Rito is a bit scared, while Momo is more worried about her harem plan will be ruined. The two decide to take a break, but when they get downstairs they find Yami in the kitchen with Mikan. Mikan has invited Yami for a sleepover and is teaching Yami how to cook, and both Rito and Momo are not comfortable with the notion of Yami wielding knifes under the same roof as them. Lala and Nana are watching nearby and Nana mentions to Lala that she also made a friend at school (referring to Mea). With the mention of school, Mikan suggests that Yami transfer into the school as well. Momo first supports the notion because her harem plan, but later wonders if it's a bad idea to let Yami closer to Rito.
Dinner time arrives and Yami has made a bunch of dishes including taiyaki soup. Rito and Momo wonders if it's safe to eat, but Rito has no choice because Yami is staring at him. After stuffing down the food, Rito decides to go out to shop to get a breather and Momo tags along (which concerns Mikan a bit). During the brief outing, Momo promises that she'll protect Rito with her life and make sure he builds his harem. Rito isn't too keen on the plan, but Momo states that there are quite a few girls who like Rito to some degree. The two return home and the first thing Rito does is stumble into Mikan and Yami taking off their clothes in the bathroom, but fortunately Rito only receives Mikan's wrath and not Yami's.
Looks like Rito isn't ready to take the relationship up to the next level.
Rito returns to his bed only to find Momo (wearing only a loose shirt) lying there already, and Momo explains she'll guard Rito from Yami over the night. Momo then pounces on Rito to and tries to get naughty, but Rito manage to shove her away and go to bed. Through the night, Rito is unable to sleep thanks to Momo sleeping beside him, but he is relieved that Momo at least fell asleep. Rito goes downstairs to get a drink, but he finds Yami waiting for him and Yami invites Rito outside for a talk. Outside, Yami talks about her experience cooking with Mikan and forms a blade with her hair, and this prompts Momo to jump in front of Rito. Momo asks if Yami is planning to kill Rito after hearing the words of the unknown entity, but Yami answers that she isn't going to kill Rito right now and she will decide on her own when to kill Rito. It turns out Yami wanted to ask Rito if her taiyaki soup was tasty. Rito answers yes (even though it's a lie), and Yami seems to be satisfied with the answer and goes back inside. Judging Yami's reaction, Momo is delighted that Yami seem to like Rito quite a bit and starts snickering deviously, and this worries Rito.
It had to happen sooner or later.
The next day, Yami transfers into Rito's school. After seeing the principal (and beating him up), Yami walks around in the school and runs into Mea. Mea refers to Yami as her big sister and reveals that she also has the transformation ability, and Mea hopes Yami will finish her job and kill Rito.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was fun chapter having Rito and Momo in constant fear for Rito's life and Yami contributing to the misunderstanding by wielding knifes at right (or wrong) moments. It's looking like that Darkness is going to the be Yami and Momo's show, but Rito still gets to be male lead since there isn't anyone to replace him. Momo stood out this chapter because she was really horny. Darkness has gone up a level with the echhi, and as such Momo's boldness has increased dramatically since the original To Love-Ru. Momo's harem-building plan sounds pretty f'ed up, but it should have plenty of potential for hilarity. I'd guess Momo's plans will backfire on Rito more often than not, but we'll see. With her deviousness and lack of inhibition, Momo is definitely going to be a more complex female lead than Lala, Haruna or probably even Yami, and it'll fun to see what other crazy stunts she tries to pull.
On Yami's side of the story, she finally transferred into Rito's school which is no surprise. It was also no surprise that the culprit behind the attack in the last chapter was the new girl Mea, and she appears to come from the same brood as Yami and has the same transformation power. Mea will probably be villain for a while, but I'm not too worried since most attractive female character who spends any significant amount of time near Rito seem to fall under his spell, but it would be kind of refreshing if there is finally someone who is completely resistant to Rito and just wants to murder him. Hopefully we'll get some nice battles between Mea and Yami and also possibly the Devilukean sisters.
Two chapters into the series, I'm liking the monthly format so far. Instead of random standalone chapters, we might actually get a real story arc with developments that matter. That would be an improvement over the original series if the story arc turns out to be half decent.
