Tsukune and friends get a surprise welcome at the Wong family mansion.
Summary:
In a boat out on the ocean, the gremlin who attacked Tsukune's group reports his failure two officers from the first branch of Fairy Tale.
Meanwhile, Fanfan and Ling Ling lead Tsukune and friends back to their family mansion in Hong Kong. Tsukune and the girls are surprised by the huge size of the mansion, but they are also surprised that no one seems to be inside. Linlin goes off to look for someone, but after some time Fanfan and the others start to worry. Fanfan goes off to look for her sister, and while wandering inside the mansion he overhears two voices talk about eliminating people. Suddenly, Fanfan notices Tsukune and Kurumu standing behind him and they get a scare from each other. The three return to the room where the other girls are, but they find the room empty of people but full of signs of struggle. Tsukune and Kurumu demand to know what's going on. Fanfan guesses that the rival Miao family has sent assassins, and what's worse the Miao family has recently started associating with Fairy Tale. Fanfan explains that he went to Japan and entered the Yokai Academy to learn more about Fairy Tale, and he decided to recruit Tsukune after learning that Tsukune and friends had destroyed a Fairy Tale branch. Kurumu doesn't care and wants to leave with Tsukune, but she and the two boys are then chased around the mansion by various monsters.
The three students take shelter in Fanfan's secret weapons storage room, but suddenly Kurumu is snagged away by a portal monster, leaving only Fanfan and Tsukune. Tsukune becomes distraught and starts crying, but Fanfan starts loading up the firearms. Fanfan explains that his mother actually came from the rival Miao family and so his parents are like Romeo and Juliet. Fanfan states that for all his life, he dreamed of ending the conflict in the yokai world, but that might just be a silly impossible dream. Fanfan tells Tsukune to escape, but instead Tsukune arms himself as well and the two of them walk to the lobby to face off against the enemy. At the lobby, Fanfan and Tsukune are faced with many men wearing suits. Tsukune prepares for a big firefight, but Fanfan suddenly recognizes that the "enemy" leader is actually his father, and Fanfan's mother is standing nearby as well. Fanfan's father then reveals that this was all a big rouse to welcome Tsukune and guests, and all the girls are okay and playing by the pool. Tsukune starts beating up Fanfan for causing him emotional distress even though Fanfan was tricked as well. Meanwhile, Inner and Outer Moka wonder when Tsukune and Fanfan became so friendly with each other. While Fanfan and Tsukune continue to tussle, Fanfan notices that his great-grandfather Dongfang Bubai is standing nearby.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This chapter felt like a filler chapter, even though it's not really a filler. The whole surprise welcome thing was kind of dumb, but I suppose that's the kind of thing one would expect from Fanfan's family. We did learn about Fanfan's motivations and why he went to Japan, but these motivations are the usual "world peace" proclamations which was a bit disappointing. It would have been more interesting if Fanfan has (or hints) that he has some ulterior motive as well. It felt like the real purpose of this chapter was for Fanfan to share some one on one, heart to heart, and even possibly romantic moments with Tsukune. Tsukune's attractiveness knows no bounds lol.
I was really looking forward to see what Dongfang Bubai looked like, but the author just had to save that revelation for the next chapter. Since Dongfang Bubai seems to be Fanfan's biological great-grandpa, he's probably not all that similar to his namesake from Jin Yong's wuxia novel. It'd be hilarious if this Dongfang Bubai was similar to the one in the novel though.
The next chapter will probably be about Tsukune and friends trying to get Moka's seal fixed, but things probably won't go smoothly either because the seal cannot be fixed or Fairy Tale will attack for real. Hopefully it'll be both.
