Rosario + Vampire II 36

Ling Ling battles Akua as Tsukune and company struggle to escape Moka's collapsing dream world.

As with any self-respecting crime family member, Ling Ling always packs some heat.

Summary:
Ling Ling and Akua battle each other with the Dimensional Sword technique. After an exchange of attacks, Ling Ling remembers Akua Shuzen as the young vampire assassin of the Miao family who was forced to leave China because she was too ruthless and bloodthirsty. Yukari and Fong Fong are shocked that the attacker is actually Moka's sister, and Akua declares her intention to take Moka back.

Back in the dream world, Kurumu and Mizore are struggling to pull Tsukune to the exit. Having over-exerted herself, Kurumu starts spitting blood and begins to fade, but Dongfang Bubai appears to give the three friends a hand.

In the real world, Ling Ling is not faring too well against Akua and already sustained some cuts. Even though Ling Ling and Akua use the same technique, Akua is a better and more experienced fighter. Backed into a corner, Ling Ling pulls out an Uzi and empties the clip at close range, but that only manages to put a few holes in Akua's cape and Akua herself is unharmed. Ling Ling realizes she must use close combat to beat Akua and leaps in, but Akua sees it coming cuts Ling Ling into several pieces. However, being a hopping corpse Ling Ling doesn't die and grabs Akua with her remaining arm and calls upon a kamikaze explosion spell to blow up both herself and Akua.

After the explosion, Fong Fong starts crying due to Ling Ling's self sacrifice, but Akua (only slighted singed) emerges from the ground and cuts down Fong Fong. Akua then turns her attention to Yukari, but she notices that Moka and the others are gone. Suddenly, a handsome man with long dark hair appear on the rooftop carrying Ling Ling's upper body. The man states that he has hidden the others in a place that Akua can't find and Akua will pay for injuring his grandchildren. Yukari initially doesn't know who the man is but soon figures it out, and Akua knows full well that the man is Dongfang Bubai in his unsealed form.

Dongfang Bubai turns out to be a bishi!?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Haha so Dongfang Bubai isn't really a shriveled-up old man. In his unsealed form, Dongfang actually a handsome and somewhat feminine looking man, which is closer to the original Dongfang Bubai from the wuxia novel the Proud, Smiling Wanderer. It'd be funny (and also more of a rip-off) if the Dongfang in Rosario + Vampire also started fighting with threads and needles, but given the description the Dongfang in the manga is more of a spellcaster and/or hand-to-hand fighter using the Dimensional Sword technique.
Anyways, this was another enjoyable chapter, and it did a good job conveying the sense of the urgency and the bad situation that the good guys are in. The action was pretty nice too, and Akua's switching between being a siscon and a cold-blooded killer was somewhat amusing. As expected, Ling Ling couldn't quite handle Akua, but she did buy enough time for Dongfang and the others to return to the real world. Since Ling Ling is already dead, she'll probably be back once Dongfang gets around to patching her up. Now that Akua is matched up against Dongfang, we'll probably have to wait a bit more for the sister vs. sister rematch between Akua and Moka. I wonder how Akua will stack up against Dongfang. Dongfang is second Dark Lord Akua has faced in battle. Several years ago Akua was clearly outclassed by Akasha, but Akua has gotten stronger since then and Dongfang probably isn't as strong as Akasha. Still, it'd be a bit of a surprise if Akua manages to take down Dongfang by herself without any underhanded tactics.
