Motto To Love-Ru 01

The second season of To Love-Ru anime starts off with an episode featuring three separate stories.

Full frontal exposure!? Not if the white light of decency has something to say about it!

At least Yami knows how to properly handle Rito.

Part 1 summary:
After the reintroduction of character in Rito's household, Rito and Lala end up leaving later than they should. While running to school, Lala tosses Rito far away into Yami and Rito is then pommeled and sent flying back to Lala. Lala then points out to Rito that they are walking in the hallway where she and Rito first met, and she confesses to Rito. Rito doesn't know how to respond, and then realize that he'll be really late for class. Lala offers up her teleportation bracelet to get them to school in time, but both she and Rito ended up naked in the locker room and Rito gets slapped by Haruna.

Rito being a pervert...

... and this is how perverts should be handled.

Part 2 summary:
Rito, Lala, Haruna, and Mikan head to the local bathhouse where they run into Yami. In the bath, Mikan tries to build her friendship with Yami but Yami tells Mikan they shouldn't get too close. Suddenly, Rito busts into the girl's bath, his body under the control of two alien bounty hunters who are after Yami. Yami and the girls don't want to kill Rito so they have a hard time restraining him, and Mikan runs off to locate the bounty hunters. One of the bounty hunters turn out to be pervert and uses Rito to go after Haruna and Lala, but this allows Mikan to locate them. Lala devises her own controller to take control of Rito, and she uses Rito to run the bounty hunters out of the bathhouse. Afterwards, Yami thanks Mikan for finding the bounty hunters and Mikan is happy about it.

Lala gets the strike in Rito Bowling

I support Yui in this decision because more often than not Lala's inventions turn out to be in menaces to society.

Part 3 summary:
At school, Yui is going around docking points from people including confiscating one of Lala's inventions. After school Rito return to the classroom to get something and finds Yui packing up her stuff. Rito tells Yui to take it easy on the point-docking, but Yui doesn't want to hear it from Rito. Yui then remembers to return Lala's item to Rito but Rito is already out the door. While walking back home, Yui sees Yami reading a book about romance and Yami asks if Yui has ever experienced love. Yui is bothered by the thought and leaves, but suddenly it starts raining and Yui is forced to find shelter at a nearby playground. It just so happens that Rito is hiding under the same structure. Rito hands Yui a handkerchief to wipe her cloths dry and Yui hand Lala's invention back to Rito. Suddenly, Rito presses himself against Yui and Yui thinks Rito is going for it and gets all excited, but Rito is really just trying to hide Yui from the perverted principal who was skipping through the playground. Yui is pissed that Rito didn't follow through and storms off, and soon afterwards Rito is blown up by Lala's invention.

Rito may not be consciously perverted, but he is definitely unconsciously perverted.

My expectations for this series isn't high, so this season premiere was passable. It's by no means good though. I think all three of the segments in this episode were based on manga chapters, but for reason I wasn't impressed. Maybe it's because I know the story, or maybe that chapters they picked weren't the good ones or maybe To-Love Ru stories are just better enjoyed in short manga chapters than as a part of an anime episode. Whichever way, this episode wasn't great. The first segment also had the bizarre white censoring. I don't remember the previous To Love anime having any censoring like that, but maybe Motto To Love-Ru is showing the naughty spots like To Love-Ru Darkness. They'll probably release an uncensored version of DVD/Blu-ray to make a few more bucks.

On to the positive side, this episode wasn't terrible which is actually saying something when it comes to the To Love-Ru anime. Production quality seems to have gone up a little compared to first season and the OVAs, although that's what most of us would expect anyways.

As I've said, my expectations for this show is low given the previous season and OVAs. If Xebec sticks with manga material then the show won't be outstanding but it'll be watchable. If Xebec decides to get creative then... God help us all. Let's hope for the best. Hopefully the new To Love-Ru Darkness manga will turn out to be decent too so at least there will be always be some tolerable portion of To Love-Ru around.
