Tatakau Shisho - The Book of Bantorra - Final Thoughts

Here's another long overdue final thoughts post, and this time it's for Tatakau Shisho - The Book of Bantorra, a 27-episode anime based on a series of light novels and animated by David Production. I picked up the series on a whim because I thought the promotional art was nice. Luckily, Bantorra turned out to be surprisingly good and is one of the better series I've watched recently. To keep things short and to the point, I'm going to use point form for this post. As with most my final thoughts posts, this post contains major spoilers to the series.

- The main reason why Bantorra is such a good series is its storytelling. The first half of Bantorra consisted of several seemingly unrelated story arcs focused on different characters, but in the middle of the series everything suddenly started to converge and the events earlier in the series took on different meanings. It was pretty impressive how Bantorra managed to weave its earlier story lines together into something grand and exciting.

- I also liked the setting of the series and in particular how the conflicts are set up in the series. The story begins with what looked like a typical good guys (the Librarians) vs. the bad guys (the Shideki Church), but it's not like that at all. It turned out that the two opposing organizations had the same goal and share a common beginning, and there is no clear line between good or evil. The "main" character Harmutz is the personification of this as she is best described as morally ambiguous. Harmutz's motivations and many other big secrets in the story are only revealed near the end of the show, and the setting and the story telling combined together really kept me guessing and interested in finding out the answers.

- Other viewers have complained about the ending of the series and how it was rushed compared to the novels. I'm not familiar with the Bantorra novels, but the ending wasn't as epic as the part where everything converged, and the ending was a bit on the cheesy side (people came back from the dead and everyone combined their strength, yay!). However, all things considered I think it was a decent and appropriate ending for the series.

- Speaking of deaths, Bantorra was definitely not afraid of killing off its characters. Many of the deaths were not that important, but the notable deaths really had their impacts on the story. Volken's death was the most unfortunate in that he just got in the way of Harmutz even though his beliefs are completely righteous. Noloty's death was the saddest because she was the hot babe with the warm and caring personality. I even felt a little sorry for Harmutz who did what she did because that was all she was taught while growing up, but I think she deserved to die at the end for all of her questionable deeds.

- The production quality for the series is generally decent, especially after David Production toned down on its terribly low quality CG. There were sometimes dips in the animation, but overall it's not too noticeable. The fighting sequences were fluid and well animated. I liked the art style used by the series and the character designs in general since I'm a fan of more realistic proportions.

Overall, Bantorra was a surprise hit for the fall 2009/winter 2010 seasons. I definitely recommended for people who like magic-fantasy, action, and good storytelling.

Fullmetal Alchemist OVA: Tales of The Master

In this gaiden-based OVA, Izumi tries to survive in the Briggs Mountains for one month.

The beginning of a legend.

Tales of The Master Summary:
18-year-old Izumi Harnet visits a northern town in hopes of learning alchemy from the famous alchemist Silver Steiner. Izumi manages to find a man named Steiner who gives Izumi a knife and tells her to survive in the wilderness of Briggs for a month. If she is able to survive then he'll accept her as his apprentice. Izumi follows Steiner's instructions and camps out on the Briggs Mountains. In the harsh winter environment, Izumi came close to giving up and dying several times during her first few days, but she manages to push through. During her month-long stay on the mountains, Izumi chased down rabbits, stole kills from wolves, took down deer with her bare hands, robbed mountain patrols of their rations, and even beat up a bear, and through this experience Izumi figures out the principle of "One is all, all is one."

You can run, but you'll never outrun Izumi.

Man, or, in this case, Woman is truly the king of beasts.

After surviving out in the wild for a month, Izumi returns to town (with the bear she beat up) to get Steiner to accept her as an apprentice. However, Izumi soon learns that the old man she talked to was Gold Steiner, Silver Steiner's martial artist older brother, and Silver Steiner himself had passed away a long time ago. Gold Steiner is impressed by Izumi surviving out in the wild and wants to teach her, but Izumi beats the crap out of him and storms off. Izumi's tale of survival would forever go down in Briggs military history as the month when mountain patrols were repeatedly attacked and robbed by a strange woman.

Gold Steiner powers up...

...but Izumi has already far surpassed his power level.

A legend is born.

Master's First Love Story Summary:
Izumi and Sig recalls how they first met to the young Ed and Al. After her training in the mountains, Izumi was on her way to begin training with her master when she bumped into Sig, and the two fell in love on first sight. Back to the present, Ed and Al give Izumi and Sig weird looks as Izumi and Sig act all lovey-dovey.

"Sometimes when we touch,
The honesty is too much,
And I have to close my eyes and hide."

"I want to hold you 'til I die,
Til we both break down and cry,
I wanna hold you 'til the fear in my subsides!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In my Simple People OVA post, I was wondering if Bones would animate Tales of the Master gaiden and it's great that they actually did animate it. Izumi's tale of survival was quite hilarious. As with all of the FMA gaidens, Tales of the Master is not an essential part of the central storyline but it explains some of the small questions in the main story. In this case, Tales of the Master explains why Izumi sent Ed and Al to the island, how she got her "One is all, all is one" principle and her infamy in Briggs mountain patrol history. Of course, the gaiden also explains why Izumi is so bad ass. Izumi's one month of survival was much tougher than the one month Ed and Al had to go through on the island, but on the other hand Izumi was much older (older than even the current Ed and Al). I wonder if the current Ed and Al (if they had their human bodies) would be able to survive in the Briggs for a month without using alchemy.
In addition to Tales of the Master, there is also the little skit about Izumi and Sig's first meeting. It was short and pretty predictable, but it was amusing nonetheless. I don't remember seeing this skit in manga form, so it's anime-original or an omake that I haven't read. I do wonder who Izumi started training under. Obviously it can't be Gold Steiner.
Given that there will be more FMA:B DVD/Bluray releases, I'm sure Bones will animate more of the gaidens. Maybe they will do the Elric Family Gaiden next. We'll see in a few months.
Dance in the Vampire Bund - Final Thoughts
It's been a few weeks since the end of the winter 2010 anime season, and I'm finally getting around to writing some final impressions posts on the series that I watched but didn't blog. Blame the lateness on my laziness and my finals. As a "Final Thoughts" post, this post just contains some loosely organized (or unorganized thoughts) I had for the show, so don't expect to see a well-structured review. Anyways, this post is about Dance in the Vampire Bund, a Shaft production that didn't turn out to be what I expected.
Post contains spoilers.
Even though it's based on a manga series, the Dance in the Vampire Bund anime has a very different story than the manga (at the mangaka's request I believe). The story is still about Mina the vampire princess trying to set up an island off the coast of Japan for her kind, but the details are different from the manga. The problem with the story is that it didn't accomplish much. The character and relationship developments were okay as Akira regained his memories and reunited with Mina, but not much happened when it came to the conflict between Mina's forces and their enemies. Mina, Akira, and allies killed a couple of minor villains and that was about it. There was the significant revelation at the end of the series, but that just came out of the blue and only had some connections to the battle in the last episode, and in the end nothing was explained about the motivation of the bad guys. I suppose the same can be said for many shows that are based on currently running mangas, but I was hoping the story would have made better progress given that Shaft had creative freedoms with the story.
Moving on, the action in Vampire Bund was also a little disappointing. For one thing, I distinctly remember Mina fighting and killing some commandos in the trailer, but that never happened in the series (I was informed that it was a scene in the manga). The series just wasn't as gloriously violent as I thought based on what was in the trailer.The quality of the action was also inconsistent. A lot of the fights are fast movements without much detail. The fight between Mina and Akira was decent, but the final battle between Akira and Mei Ran was not that good. For much of the fight we had Akira and Mei Ran as a blue and a yellow streak clashing with each other. The rest of that fight wasn't impressive either as it consisted of simple unidirectional movements and slow-mo close-ups. It looked like they were running low on budget for detailed animation.
Although the action and story weren't that great, I did like some aspects of Vampire Bund. The characters designs and art were quite nice, and I found the Vampire Maid skits at the end of the episodes to be very amusing. The maids were probably the best part of the show. The music wasn't bad either, and I liked both the opening and ending songs. As for Mina's much talked about nude scenes, I'm rather indifferent to those. I don't really see a problem with them, but at the same time I'm not really into nude little girls either.
There is nothing especially bad about Vampire Bund, but on the other hand there is nothing especially good either. Everything about the show hovers around the average mark. I had somewhat high expectations after seeing the trailer for the series, and the series didn't really deliver (mostly in the action department), and so I found the series to be a bit disappointing. The ending has the series set up for another season, and I might watch it in hopes that it will be better than this first season.
Gantz 317
The Gantzers continue to battle the giant aliens on alien home turf.
The Kurono Double Team makes its action debut.
Summary:
The Gantzers and alien troopers continue to battle. The Gantzer leader and the two elite alien trooper continue to trade blows. The two elite troopers launch lightning at the Gantzer leader, but the leader blocks the lightning with his power arms. The leader retaliates with his palm cannons which sends the two elite troopers reeling, and the Gantzer leader uses the opportunity to trip up and decapitate one of the elite troopers. Meanwhile, Kurono #1 faces off against the alien commander. Kato and Kaze join in to help, but none of then can hit the alien commander. The commander closes in Kurono #1, but he is forced off his path by gunfire from Kurono #2. The two Kuronos then combine their efforts to drive off the alien commander. In the midst of the battle, the Gantzer leader calls home for extraction, and all of the Gantzers are teleported back to Tokyo and the Gantzers managed to capture one of the aliens.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So the purpose of the whole mission was to capture one measly alien? I hope they had some other goal as well since it'd be pretty stupid if this whole surprise attack on alien home turf was just to capture one alien. If all they wanted was aliens, they could have easily captured a few in Tokyo. I suppose the Gantzers are after intelligence on the aliens, but I wonder how they are going to get it from the lone captive. Anyways, the quick return to Tokyo was certainly a surprise, but it's better than the Gantz crew being slaughtered by the alien soldiers. This also means Sakurai will survive since teleport supposedly repairs all damage.

Questions about the Gantzer's strategy aside, this chapter was a little better than the previous few, but still all that great. We finally saw some Kurono double team action, but the two of them didn't get any kills while working together. The alien commander didn't do much as well. The action was a little hard to follow due to the art. Oku's drawings are suffering from having too much detail. I have to admit that the power arms are pretty awesome though. If the Gantzers have a few more power suits then the aliens would have a hard time stopping them.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood 54

The conclusion to Mustang vs. Envy, and the Armstrongs and Central soldier vs. Sloth and the mannequin soldiers.

Summary:
At the end of the Ishval War, Riza kneels over the grave of an Ishvalan child while Mustang stands nearby. Even though the war is officially over, Riza states that the war is not over in her heart, and she never imagined that her father's alchemy, tattooed on to her back and entrusted to Mustang, would lead to so much carnage and tragedy. Riza asks Mustang to burn her back so the secrets of her father's alchemy cannot be passed on, and Mustang reluctantly agrees.

Although guns aren't the most effective weapons against a homunculus, we still have to give Riza a chance to show off her dual-wielding skills.

Back to the present, down in the tunnels Riza pulls out a pistol and points it at Mustang's head. Mustang wonders what Riza is doing and Riza states that the real Mustang would always call her "Riza" instead of "lieutenant" when they were alone. "Mustang" thinks that he had given himself away, but Riza was actually just lying to check if the Mustang in front of her is real, and luckily Envy fell for the lie. Riza pulls out her dual pistols and unloads her clips into Envy. Envy attacks and graces Riza's shoulder, and Riza pulls out her rifle and sends Envy staggering with more bullets. Envy is finally able to grab Riza by extending his arm through the floor tiles, but the homunculus is then engulfed by Mustang's flames. Mustang burns Envy until the homunculus reverts back to his larva form. Mustang steps on the tiny Envy is about to finish the homunculus off for good, but Riza points her pistol at Mustang and suggests that Mustang let her finish things up. Mustang is unwilling to let go of his rage and demands Riza lower her weapon, but suddenly Ed and Scar appear and Ed retrieves Envy using his alchemy. The enraged Mustang demands Ed hand Envy over to him, but Ed isn't sure if that's a good idea.

Mustang: That's for trying to get a feel on Riza, you perv.

Envy: *Sniffles* I am going to sue all of you for animal abuse.

Ed, Scar and Riza stand off against the enraged Mustang, who is bent on making Envy suffer. Mustang wants Ed to hand Envy over, but Ed, Scar, and Riza argue that Mustang only wants to satiate his own hatred. After some convincing words from Scar and Riza, Mustang calms down. Envy tries to goad his enemies into going after each other, but nobody takes the bait. Instead, Ed starts psychoanalyzing Envy and concludes that Envy is actually envious of humans, and Envy responds by going nuts. After freeing himself by biting Ed's real hand, Envy expresses his disgust for humans and states that the fact Ed figured out how he felt was the ultimate insult. The homunculus then commits suicide by ripping out his own Philosopher's Stone and thus brings the battle to a conclusion.

Bye bye Envy.

In Central HQ, Olivier Armstrong rallies the Central soldiers against the horde of one-eyed zombies. Meanwhile, Sloth finally frees himself from Alex's spike trap and sets his eyes on Olivier. Alex tries to stop the homunculus but he is unable to fight effectively with only one arm. The soldiers become worried as Sloth pounds on Alex, but Olivier states that her brother can handle it. Lo and behold, Alex uses a blow from Sloth to pop his left shoulder back in and begins a ferocious counterattack against the homunculus.

Is there any doubt that Alex Armstrong is awesome?

More spike treats for Sloth.

At the front gate of Central HQ, the commander in charge frantically phones to Brigadier General Clemin after his post is shelled by a Briggs tank. Clemin orders the soldiers to return fire despite the fact that civilian living near the gate haven't been evacuated yet. Before the order can be relayed to the front gate, a group of Briggs soldiers led by Falman and Buccaneer charges in and takes over the room. One of the Briggs soldiers explain that Falman knows Central HQ inside out, so all they had to do was dig a tunnel into HQ, and that tunnel is dug by none other than Ed and Al's master Izumi Curtis.

Deep underground, Hohenheim arrives in Father's throne room and states that he's going to punish Father. Father responds by saying that his body came from Hohenheims, but this time Hohenheim will become part of his body.

Hohenheim to Father: Geez, you look so old. That's what happens when you sit here and don't go anywhere.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another homunculus bites the dust. Most of this episode was focused on Mustang and Envy, both on their battle against each other and even more on their own internal conflicts. Mustang was going a bit out of control with his rage, but the thought of losing Riza was enough to convince him to stop. I don't remember seeing the flashback at the beginning of the episode in the manga (or the chapters associated with the current storyline), but it was a good scene to add to give Mustang's scene a little bit more perspective.
As for Envy, he may have been an evil bastard for most of the series, but at his core he really is a pitiful creature. FMA:B captured Envy's last moments very well. I didn't really feel much for Envy when he died in the manga, but I felt a little sorry for him after watching this episode. He still deserved the curb stomping by Mustang though.
Moving on, Alex Armstrong continues to kick ass and creates another awesome moment despite his relatively short screen time. The boxing match between Alex and Sloth was like a Rocky fight with no defense by either side, but Alex managed to pop his shoulder back in and gain the upper hand for now. Sloth will probably go back to using his super speed soon though. Also in Central HQ, the Briggs crew and Izumi has arrived. Izumi was likely the person with the glowing red eyes in episode 50. With Izumi onboard, getting past the walls of Central HQ became a piece of cake for the Briggs crew. Things aren't looking too bad for the good guys, but let's not forget that a couple of homunculi are still on the prowl.
Lastly, Hohenehim has finally reappeared and is up against Father in a clash of the titans. Should be an interesting contest given that both of them can use alchemy without moving.
Angel Beats! 04
The SSS participate in a school baseball tournament.
Yui seems to have potential...
... but it look like someone up above doesn't want her to sing.
Summary:
At SSS HQ, Yui auditions to be the new lead singer of Girls Dead Monster, but she ends up hanging herself with the microphone cord. The SSS members are not particularly impressed, but Yuri decides to leave the decision to current band members. With the Girl De Mo topic put aside, Yuri orders her crew to form teams for the upcoming school baseball tournament, and if any of the SSS teams do worse than the regular student teams then those SSS members would be in for some nasty punishment. Hinata quickly recruits Otonashi but he fails to recruit Hisako, Matsushita and TK who have been recruited by others. In the end, Hinata ends up with a team of 8 consisting of himself, Otonashi, Yui, Shiina, Noda, and three of Yui's ordinary student friends. Since there are only 8 of them, nobody plays shortstop.
Just admit that you got a thing for me.
~~~Moe Attack!~~~

Looks like someone is immune to moe.

Let's get ready to RUMBLE!!!... I mean PLAY BALL!

The three SSS teams (including Hinata's) barge into the tournament as unregistered teams and they easily move through the tournament because the SSS members are actually quite good and the ordinary student teams suck. The SSS' progress prompts Tenshi to enter her own team consisting of the school team players. After more rounds of competition, Hinata's team ends up facing Tenshi's team in the finals. Hinata's team has several good hitters and a decent pitcher in Otonashi, but their outfield (consisting of Yui's friends) leaves much to be desired on defense. Otonashi manages to recruit Matsushita as an outfielder using meal coupons, and this evens up the game. In the bottom of the 9th inning Hinata's team is up 8 to 7 with Tenshi's team at bat. With two outs and runners on second and third, Otonashi calls timeout to request for a change, but he sees Hinata spacing out. Hinata explains he has been in similar situation before in his life. In that game, the hitter sends a pop fly to Hinata who is the second baseman. It was supposed to be an easy game-ending catch, but Hinata doesn't remember what happened. He only remembers sitting in the locker room after the game feeling dejected. When Hinata was finally about to leave, he was approached by an older student who handed him something to "cheer him up".

Noda might be stupid, but I have to admit this is pretty awesome.

A little staring match before the real game..

After Hinata recalls his experience, Otoanshi wonders if Hinata will disappear if he makes a similar catch. Hinata denies it, but Otonashi is not so sure. The game is back on and just as scripted the hitter sends a pop fly to second base. Hinata gets ready to catch the ball, but Otonashi doesn't want Hinata to catch it since he doesn't want Hinata to disappear. Luckily for Otonashi, Hinata is attacked by Yui who is trying to get Hinata back for previous abuses. The distraction allows the runners to score and Hinata's team loses. Back at SSS HQ, a disappointed and pissed off Yuri wishes that both Hinata and Yui would disappear.

 The game-losing play. Is that a camel clutch or a double cheek pinch?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Man, I wish real baseball was this fun to watch. You can probably guess I'm not a baseball fan. Real baseball games are too long and boring most of the time. I also wish real baseball was that easy. It'd be great if I can hit a home run by swinging the bat with only one arm (perhaps doable in Wii Sports). I'm beginning to think that the SSS is actually a team of people with superpowers. How else do we explain the one-handed home runs and diving catches while holding a broom or eating noodles? I loved the final moment where it looked like Hinata might catch the ball and disappear and Otonashi was running in to stop him just to have Yui do the job. I kind of saw it coming, but it was hilarious anyways. The notable disappointment about the baseball sequence was Tenshi didn't actually play. She could have programmed herself with an auto home run function and a 200mph fast ball to ensure victory. Not that she needed to play though as it turned out.
Anyways, after a stint on the serious dramatic side last week, Angel Beats! is back to slapstick comedy. Good for them, I say, because an episode following last week's formula wouldn't be nearly as fun. It'd probably be more intelligent though. Despite the hints about Hinata, nobody disappeared this week, and this may set up for multiple-death episodes in the future. Even if Hinata had made the catch he might not have disappeared, since his death is hinted to be having more to do with drugs even if the game was the catalyst.
Hinata aside, Yui also received plenty of screen time in this episode as the candidate to replace Iwasawa. They even replaced Tenshi's cool piano playing in the OP with Yui posing around in a guitar. I guess this gives them two versions of the OP single and 2x the profit (or at least they wish). Yui has plenty of spunk, but I'm not sure about her voice. I have a feeling she'll sound like a chipmunk, but voice and singing skills probably take back seats to promotion and packaging for a girl band like Girl De Mo. The other band members can probably take care of the music.
Overall the episode was funny, but not much went on in regards to the story. The decision to interrupt the baseball tournament raises more question about what Yuri is trying to accomplish. It appears that Yuri is just planning random events that she thinks will piss off Tenshi, and she seems to be doing this in part for her own enjoyment. I might be reading too much into this, but maybe resisting is just a way for Yuri to find happiness.
Oh, in case anyone cares, this post is late because I had a final today at 8:30 in the morning. Yeah, pity me lol. Still one more to go before I'm done with my undergrad studies. On that note, I probably should be studying instead of writing this.
Bleach 401
Aizen explains the power of the Hougyoku to Isshin.
Aizen doesn't get ignored very often, but he seems to be taking it well.
Summary:
Aizen declares that the Hougyoku has begun to understand his heart. Aizen then explains that the Hougyoku's true power is to capture and materialize the heart/desires of everything around it. He then goes on a long winded speech about how everything up to this point, from the Vizards to Ichigo's power to Orihime and Chad's powers were all creations of the Hougyoku and therefore are all part of his master plan. At this moment, Ichigo flies by and is sent into a building by Gin's bankai, but Ichigo managed to block the attack and recovers quickly. Gin arrives and wonders if he interrupted Aizen's speech, but Aizen is finished with his words and starts powering up with the Hougyoku. Neither Ichigo and Isshin know what's going on and they start arguing with each other as Aizen is powering up. Suddenly, Aizen is shot from behind by a beam, but Aizen is unfazed and turns around to greet the arriving Urahara.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So Mr. Hat and Clogs has finally decided to show up to the fight. This could have made for a good chapter, but the chapter was marred by another one of Aizen's long-winded "It's all part my plan" speeches. I suppose it was important to explain what the Hougyoku can really do, but I'm getting tired of Aizen and his speeches. If I understood correctly, the Hougyoku is what makes "Amazing" happens and is therefore what powers the NBA (Where Amazing Happens) the cause of many of the unlikely events in the series. That's certainly a nice and simple explanation to cover everything. With the Hougyoku, Aizen can probably give himself more crazy powers (not that he really needs them...) and make it even less likely that anyone can beat him. Kubo probably added Urahara into the mix at this time to even up the fight a little. On the other hand, since the Hougyoku supposedly listens to the will of people around it, maybe Ichigo can wrestle control and use the Hougyoku to give himself a power-up. The whole battle at fake Karakura Town has been a mess, but I'm interested to see what happens from now on.

Note that since next week is Golden Week in Japan, there will be no Weekly Shounen Jump, so no Bleach, Naruto, or One Piece.

Naruto 492

Naruto starts Biju Taming 101.

Sorry, Narukos, but I prefer them lolis.

Summary:
After driving off the giant squid, Killer Bee lands on the ship and starts singing his enka rap, which leaves Naruto confused. The Konoha contingent of Naruto, Yamato, Mighty Guy and others is welcomed on to the island by groundskeeper Motoi, who explains that Killer Bee had gained control over the hachibi by training on this island. After checking into his room and learning that Killer Bee is the hachibi's host, Naruto asks Killer Bee to teach him how to control the kyubi. Killer Bee initially refuses outright, but Naruto figures out that Killer Bee likes guys who can make beats. However, Naruto discovers that he lacks the rapping skills and so he tries to entice Killer Bee with Harem-no-jutsu, but Killer Bee is not interested and slams the door in Naruto's face.

Refusing to give up so easily, Naruto manages to convince Motoi to show him Killer Bee's old training grounds. Accompanied by Yamato, Motoi leads Naruto to the Waterfall of Truth which is the first step Killer Bee took to control his tailed beast. Following Motoi's instructions, Naruto sits on a small mound in front of the waterfall and closes his eyes. When Naruto opens his eyes, he is surprised to see an evil copy of himself walking out of the waterfall.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lol Kabitzin's prediction of a tentacle-Harem-no-Jutsu orgy came surprisingly close to happening. Given Killer Bee's quick rejection of Harem-no-Jutsu, we can conclude that a) Killer Bee is not interested in women (or at least not curvy ones), or b) Killer Bee is jealous that Naruto, who has never rapped before in his whole life, is already making better rhymes than he is. Despite his cold attitude in this chapter, Killer Bee will eventually come around to teach Naruto how to control the kyuubi, but for now though Naruto will probably do fine on his own in the first challenge. An evil twin who is pissed about signing autographs... not too sure what to say about that, although the whole thing is probably a dream sequence. Naruto will likely have to pass a number of challenges before he can tame the kyuubi, so that's probably the story for the next few chapters.
On another note, Killer Bee does have Sameheda with him, which means Kisame is on the island. I wonder if this has anything to do with Mighty Guy being brought along. Guy and Kisame (more precisely, a clone of Kisame) had a match a long time ago which Guy won, so maybe the story is setting up a rematch between the two.
One Piece 582
It's flashback time.
Is Luffy trying to spank Garp? Kids have no respect for elders these days.
Summary:
After the battle at the summit, many pirate crews are preparing to go to the grand line, while the Marines are also preparing for this influx of pirates. Not far from the island of Amazon Lily, Ivankov and his comrades say goodbye to Jimbei, Hancock and Law to head off on their own. After arriving at Amazon Lily, all the visitors are confined to a beach on the island, while Hancock heads back to her palace. At the palace, Hancock learns that Luffy has woken up and wants to meet him at once. Elder Nyon tries to warn Hancock against breaking the rules, but Hancock isn't about to listen. Near a rocky beach on the island, Luffy is busy destroying the nearby trees to let out his anguish while Law and his crew hangs out by the beach. Jimbei walks in to try to calm Luffy down, but Luffy is still beyond consoling and lets out a loud scream. At the same time, Luffy begins to think back to the first time he met Ace.
10 years ago in the East Blue after Luffy eaten his Devil Fruit, Garp put Luffy into the care of Curly Dadan, a criminal who is taking care of Ace in exchange for not going to jail. Dadan and her crew already had their hands full with Ace, but they couldn't say no to Garp. While Dadan tries to negotiate terms with Garp, Ace appeared and spat into Luffy's face. While Luffy was fuming at Ace, Garp told Luffy that he'll be living with Ace from then on.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Contrary to what I said last week, looks like the story of One Piece is finally slowing down a bit and has gone into flashback mode. It would have been interesting to see what happened to Moria from last chapter, but we can probably assume that he bit the dust. The story going into a lull is expected after the drawn out battle at Marineford. It would have been very difficult to maintain that pace especially for a series that has no foreseeable ending. So the next few chapters is probably going to be the story of Luffy and Ace growing up together, having fights and learning to appreciate each other. I wonder about Garp's decision to let Ace and Luffy be raised by a bunch of criminals. That's probably one of the reason why both of them ended up as pirates instead of Marines. The flashback probably won't be too bad especially if Oda sticks in some interesting trivia here and there, but there won't be the kind of excitement we saw during the battle at Marineford.

Oh, and there was more crazy snot-and-tears crying from Luffy in this chapter. I'll never get used to those expressions.

Minatsuki and Masaru vs. Sumeragi.

A slap to the face or bucket of cold water may have sufficed, but we all know Minatsuki loves to bust balls.

Masaru remembers his past and how his boyfriend cheated on him with a woman. In the emotion of the moment, Masaru released his Branch of Sin and killed the woman. However, in his hallucination Masaru sees that the woman has suddenly come back to life and the Deadmen starts attacking madly. In reality, Minatsuki and Masaru are actually fighting each other and Sumeragi plans for the two Deadmen to kill each other in combat. However, Minatsuki manages to break out of the hallucination due to her own twisted personality. Masaru is still trapped in his own hallucination and continues to attack Minatsuki, but Minatsuki snaps him out of it by kicking him in the balls.

Now that her illusions have been broken, Sumeragi changes tactic and attacks sending out butterfly-shaped spinning blades. Masaru and Minatsuki are injured by the attack, but the wounds aren't enough to keep them down. Inspired by Ganta's attitude, Masaru and Minatsuki refuse to give up and instead joins their powers together into a spiked whip. The two Deadmen then proceed to punish Sumeragi with the whip before moving on.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Minatsuki... gotta love that crazy bitch sometimes. It seems being somewhat twisted and insane has its benefits, at least when it comes to fighting in DW. Despite being a girl, Minatsuki definitely has more "balls" than Masaru, especially after she kicked him between the legs. Anyways, this was a standard but decent fighting chapter for the side characters. Sumeragi's abilities are probably quite useful against most opponent, but unfortunately she ran into Minatsuki. The hallucinations revealed a bit about the pasts of the two Deadmen. We learn that Masaru probably went to prison because he killed his boyfriend's lover. We don't know how he picked up the Branch of Sin, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tamaki had something to do with it. The past of Minatsuki is not as clear. If I remember correctly, supposedly Minatsuki's mother abandoned her after a devastating earthquake, so the stuff in this chapter is mostly just effects of Sumeragi's hallucinogen... or is it? Did Minatsuki become so twisted because her mother abandoned her or was there more to it? We can't really tell at this point, but hopefully the story will reveal her complete past in the future.
So side fight number 1 is over. There are still Senji vs. Akatsuki and Hitara vs. Hajime. I'm looking forward to Senji's fight more since Hitara really didn't do much until this point of the story, but it'll be interesting to see what the old man's abilities are. Hopefully we'll check on what Ganta is doing as well. He'll probably be facing Madoka given the silhouettes of the completed Forgeries shown in the previous chapter.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood 53
Mustang battles Envy in the underground tunnels.
Bro-fist for ratings!
Summary:
The citizens of Central are wondering what's going on with their city, so many people turn on the radio. To the citizen's surprise, Mrs. Bradley is on the radio recalling how the Central Army tried to kill her and how she was rescued by Mustang's forces. Mustang's forces led by Breda and Maria have holed up at the radio station to keep the army forces at bay while the interview continues. After Mrs. Bradley recounts her story, Breda takes over the mic and states that the Fuhrer's train has been attacked on the way back from Eastern HQ and lies that the top brass in Central are trying to overthrow the Fuhrer. Out on the streets, Scar's Ishvalan comrades also helping to spread the misinformation. At Central HQ, Brigadier General Clemin phones the radio station and demands that the broadcast be stopped, but the station chief lies that they have no choice as Mustang's group is pointing guns at their heads. In reality, the radio station crew couldn't be more willing to broadcast the breaking news, and Maria takes over the mic and states that for the sake of justice they'll fight against the corrupt military. Among the many listeners of the radio station are Havoc, Scar's master, General Grumman, and Denny Brosh, and Brosh instantly recognizes Maria's voice.
I spy a big tank pointing its cannon my way.
On top of the walls of Central HQ, a Central military commander is wondering why his troops can't hold off the enemy. The commander receives an urgent phone call which reports that the enemy has brought in something big. The commander takes up his binocular and, to his shock, discovers a tank manned by the Brigg forces pointing its cannon right at him. The tank fires and blows up the Central commander's position.
Mustang deserves his own "fire"-works show.
In the 3rd Laboratory, Mustang spends a few seconds posing incinerating all the mannequin soldiers. Meanwhile, Envy chases May into a large ventilation shaft. Envy jumps after May and lands hard on one of May's transmutation circles, and this causes the floor to give way and both Envy and May fall into the large room where Ed and company were fighting the mannequins. Envy spots his opponents and tries to spark a fight between Mustang and Scar, but both men know better than to listen to the homunculus. Mustang then asks Envy if he's the one who killed Mae Hughes, and after avoiding the answer for a few seconds Envy finally admits to the murder. Envy then changes his face to that of Mrs. Hughes to insult Mustang further, and Mustang puts on his second alchemy glove to avenge his best friend.
The gloves are off on now.
BURN...
...BABY...
...BURN!!!!!
Mustang tells Ed and the others to move on while he handles Envy. Envy blocks the path of Ed and company stating that no one is going leave, but Mustang sets Envy's mouth on fire. Ed asks Riza if she and Mustang are going to be okay, and Riza states that they'll manage. After Ed and company walk through the giant doors, Envy transforms into his true form to crush Mustang, but Mustang burns out Envy's eye balls and then engulfs the homunculus in flames. As Envy writhes on the ground in pain, Mustang declares that he is going the drown Envy in pain and agony until he dies. Realizing that he's in trouble, Envy smashes the walls to distract Mustang and then the homunculus escapes through the giant doorway. Mustang tells Riza to stand guard while he chases down Envy, but Riza decides to follow Mustang anyways.
Hughes is dead! Dead and Gone!!!!
Somewhere beyond the giant doorway, Ed and company are making their way through the tunnels lined heavily by pipes and cables. Darius states that he has a bad feeling about the place, and May states that she feels a giant mass of "ki" down the path as if a large of group of people are there. Meanwhile, Ed and Scar are hanging out in the back of the group, and Scar knows that Ed is concerned about Mustang and his thirst for revenge. Elsewhere, Envy transforms into Hughes in order to distract Mustang, but Mustang incinerates the homunculus regardless. Envy then tries to get close to Mustang so the alchemist can't use his big flame blasts, but Mustang uses his other hand to launch pinpoint attacks at Envy'e eyes, and Envy has no choice but to escape down another tunnel. After escaping down the tunnel, Envy spots Riza and gets an idea.
A little later, Mustang and Riza run into each other in the tunnels and Mustang states that he had lost Envy. While Mustang has his back turned, Riza pulls out a pistol and points it at Mustang's head.
Who's who?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This week's show wasn't as action packed as the two weeks prior, but the story is still moving quickly. The first one third of this episode was devoted to Mustang's subordinates manipulating information to sway the masses. Since Mustang's grand scheme is to eventually become the head of state, having public support is important. There might not be TV or internet in FMA, but manipulating radio broadcasts in such times is just as effective. The key to telling an effective lie is that there has to be some truth within the lies, and Mustang's group has Mrs. Bradley's testimony and the news of the attack on the Fuhrer's train to use. This effort doesn't directly help with the fighting, but it might prove important in the aftermath. It also serves to hide Mustang's true location from the Central army as well.

The main event of the episode though is of course Mustang finally getting his hands on Envy, the murderer of Maes Hughes. Given the history, Mustang vs. Envy is a fight that should have happened in the old series but never did, but now we are finally seeing it in animated form. With arguably the strongest attack power of any State Alchemist, an angry Mustang is a fearsome sight to behold. All of Mustang's pent-up grief and rage has finally found a release point. I was sort of hoping it would be a closer fight, but Mustang the runaway freight-train of RAGE was pretty good too. It's a fight where the emotions are running high, and Envy is certainly getting what he deserves. Mustang certainly has the advantage in power, but Envy isn't going to go away that easily, and next episode we'll probably see his disguises and underhanded tactics. It looks like Ed and Scar are going to involved as well, but they are not doing it to help Mustang defeat Envy... We'll see what happens next episode.

Sekirei 99

The story of how Uzume met Chiho.

Damn you for ruining our yuri moment!

Summary:
Uzume climbs into Chiho's hospital room and holds her hand and starts apologizing. Chiho wakes up and recalls that she dreamed about her first meeting with Uzume. On that day, Chiho was in a park sitting in a wheelchair when she spotted Uzume hiding in a tree. Uzume and Chiho took a liking to each other on first sight. Uzume explained that she was helping a friend escape from some pursuers because that friend took something valuable. Chiho stated that Uzume didn't seem like a bad person and revealed that she is staying in the nearby hospital. After the first meeting, Uzume would regularly visit Chiho and eventually asked Chiho to wing her. Back to the present, Chiho and Uzume's meeting is interrupted by Kakizaki who tells Uzume that Higa wants to speak to her.

Back at Izumo Inn, Matsu brings up some data on Chiho and discovers that Chiho is slowly dying of a disease that's incurable with modern medicine. Minato wonders if MBI can cure Chiho, but Matsu states that Uzume can't ask the MBI because she had helped Matsu escape with the jinki. Despite knowing this, Minato thinks MBI is still worth a shot and wants to rescue Uzume.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's a little disappointing that Minato's crew hasn't started the "rescue Uzume" operation yet, but after reading Sekirei for so long I'm getting used to this. The back story between Uzume in Chiho was nothing out of the ordinary. A random meeting between a Sekirei and potential Ashikabi is probably how many Sekirei were winged, and the story was what I would've imagined. The only notable bit was that Uzume had helped Matsu escape, and this ties in with the fact that Uzume lives at Izumo Inn. People in trouble with the MBI like to come to Miya for help.
I'm still looking forward to the showdown between Minato and Higa. Minato will definitely rescue Yukari and likely Chiho as well, but I'm not too sure about Uzume. I like happy endings, but the Sekirei Plan is made so that only one Ashikabi can win, and so Uzume and also Shiina will have to be defeated somewhere down the road. I can see Uzume being defeated in the showdown between Minato and Higa as a way to add some emotional impact to the story. In any case, hopefully the action won't be too far off now.
Angel Beats! 03
The SSS goes on a mission to invade "Tenshi's territory" while Iwasawa and her band tries to distract Tenshi.
She might look like Haruhi, but she's actually more like Simon Cowell.
Summary:
At the SSS clubhouse, Iwasawa performs her newest single, a slow ballad, to the SSS crew, but Yuri doesn't think the song has enough spunk to draw the crowds and distract Tenshi. Yuri then outlines a plan to invade "Tenshi's territory" in the evening. To ensure the mission's success, Iwasawa and her band Girls Dead Monster are going to put on a concert and Yui enlists the help of Takiyama, a bespectacled genius/computer nerd who insists everyone call him "Christ".
I thought idiots are supposed to be immune to math since they don't understand it.
Otonashi finds out first hand that fans can be an annoying bunch.
In the hallways after the meeting, Otonashi runs into Girls Dead Monster assistant Yui who is plastering posters of the evening concert all over the place. Otonashi then stumbles onto the classroom that the band is practicing in. As the band takes a break, Iwasawa chats with Otonashi in the hallways. Iwasawa reveals that she lived in a dysfunctional home with an alcoholic father. Trying to forget the troubles at home, Iwasawa got into music and started performing on the streets after picking up a junk acoustic guitar. Things seemed to be going well for Iwasawa as she was working part-time jobs and going to auditions, but one day she fainted at work. The next thing she knew, she was in hospital and cannot move or speak. A while ago, her father hit her in the head with a beer bottle, and that somehow caused enough brain damage to paralyze Iwasawa, and Iwasawa eventually died in hospital. After hearing Iwasawa's story, Otonashi begins to think that the SSS members may be fighting Tenshi in order to "get justice" for the unfortunate events in their lives. In the hallways, Tenshi takes down a few posters of the evening concert.
 I'm surprised that guitar even plays.
Good to see that at least Otonashi has a sense of dignity.
Why do people still use Winding XO?... Well, I still use Windows XP, but that's because I have a five year ago computer.
It's night time, and the members of Girls Dead Monster are in the gym preparing to start the concert. Initial attendance is quite low, but the concert starts anyways. In the girls' dorms, Yuri, Otonashi, Takiyama and several other SSS members break into Tenshi's room. Yuri wants data from Tenshi's PC, and Takiyama brings along his tools to crack the password. After cracking the password, Yuri and company starts sifting through the data, but they need Girls Dead Monster to buy them time. Back at the gym, the crowd has gradually grown larger and has also drawn Tenshi's attendance, but suddenly a group of teachers and staff show up to break up the unsanctioned concert. Seeing that the concert has stopped, Tenshi is about to leave. On stage, one of the teachers grab Iwasawa's beloved acoustic guitar and suggests that it be thrown away, but Iwasawa grabs the guitar back and starts playing her new ballad. Another band members runs up to the control room and airs the performance all over campus, and this draws Tenshi back into the gym. Iwasawa sings her heart out during the performance, and at the end she disappears into thin air.
Last song under the spotlight.
Thanks to Iwasawa's distraction, Yuri's group is able to discover some interesting data about Tenshi's abilities. A day later in a SSS meeting, Yuri states that Tenshi is able to program her own abilities, and that doesn't lead to a very good conclusion. Yuri declines to share her thoughts with the others, but in her own mind she knows the evidence points to there being no divine presence in this world, and she also wonders why Tenshi chooses suicide. The others start to wonder about Iwasawa, and Yuri states that Iwasawa disappeared because she chose to accept her fate. After the meeting, Otonashi wonders about the conditions that causes someone to be erased from this world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Without a doubt, this was the weakest episode so far in this series. There was a lot of concert footage, but there wasn't much in terms of action or comedy. The concert footage was nice the first time around, but the novelty is beginning to wear off, and it's not too exciting when there is no action to accompany it. There were a couple somewhat lame jokes at the beginning, but the fun, physical slapstick comedy was MIA in this episode. Instead, the rest of the episode consists of the story of Iwasawa's derailed musical career and more puzzling bits about Tenshi and the world that the characters live in. Iwasawa's life and death were unfortunate, but I can't tell if the story was supposed to make the audience feel sad. It didn't quite work on me, since I was expecting comedy and action after watching the first two episodes. Or maybe I have a heart of stone.

It looks like Iwasawa is gone for good as she has been removed from the ED as well. I'm not too surprised someone died in this episode, since the series is only 13 episodes and there are quite a few SSS members to kill off. Iwasawa appears to have fulfilled her regret/wishes from life, and that's probably why she passed on. With her gone, I wonder if we'll have any more Girl Dead Monster concerts.

The other interesting bit in this episode is that Tenshi can program her own abilities using a computer, which is consistent with the binary sparks that fly out from her moves. I'm not too sure how Yuri connected that with there being no divine presence and Tenshi preferring suicide (maybe I read the subs wrong), but I'm hoping series will explain that for us. Now that the SSS has hacked into Tenshi's computer, I wonder if they can purposely plant something in Tenshi's programming to make Tenshi BSOD or freeze up during battle.

Overall, this was a borderline boring episode. From the way things look right now, Angel Beats! could fall into a formula consisting of Otonashi learning about someone's story and that person disappearing during a mission. I won't mind it too much as long as there are cool fights and/or fun comedy. Hopefully the next episode will be a bit more entertaining.

Bleach 400

Ichigo vs. Gin, Isshin vs. Aizen continued.

It extends at 500 times the speed... yeah, time to make more penis jokes about Gin's sword.

Summary:
Realizing the super long sword tactic isn't working, Gin shrinks his sword back down to dagger size and attacks Ichigo up close. Realizing that Gin can extend and shrink his sword with no time at all, Ichigo barely dodges Gin's surprise strike and forces Gin to fall back. Ichigo tells Gin that he has figured out the trick, but Gin explains that his sword can actually extend 500 times faster. The battle then quickly reconvenes.

Meanwhile, Aizen appears to be worn down by Isshin's attacks. Aizen admits that he has reached the limit of his shinigami self, but the Hougyoku is starting to understand his heart.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bleach has reached the 400 chapter milestone, but it turned out to be another action chapter without much progress. As expected, Gin does have a way of fending off Ichigo, and his bankai isn't as bad as so many of us originally thought. Quick extend/retract might not sound like the most impressive power, but combat purposes it's actually quite useful since the length of the weapon can change quickly. Gin's one way extension/retraction is very fast, but I wonder how fast his sword can do this in cycles (extend, retract, and repeat quickly). If Gin can do that very quickly then it'll be really hard to block his attacks. Gin probably had several opportunity to seriously wound Ichigo, but he is restricted by standard villain tendencies to slowly turn up the heat so Ichigo has time to adjust to their attacks. It's probably in Ichigo's best interest to keep this fight close so Ichigo can make Gin block with the base of his blade and thus influence where Gin is pointing the sword.
As for the other fight, I'm surprised Aizen actually got worn down. If Isshin has seen Aizen's shikai, then Aizen should have trolled Isshin with the genjutsu already. Maybe Isshin never saw Aizen's shikai? Regardless of how Aizen is going to do it, we know Aizen is going to win, so maybe Aizen is just going to use another method this time.
Finally, there were a few panels of Rangiku lying around. Maybe she'll get involved in Gin's fight, but she doesn't look she's in any condition to interfere.
Bleach
Kurosaki Ichigo is not a regular 15 year old, because he has always had the ability to see spirits and ghosts. One day, a female Shinigami (God of Death) named Kuchiki Rukia appears before him, hunting for an evil spirit. But during the confrontation, the Shinigami's powers are transfered to Ichigo. Thus begins the adventures of Ichigo and Rukia and their mission to herd Hollows (fallen spirits) as well as confronting other spiritual beings.
